Aquaman Redesign by DanielHeard Aquaman Redesign by DanielHeard
My redesign of Arthur Curry for Project: Rooftop's Sea Change contest.
With this I just tried to remain as faithful to the classic look as possible while throwing in some little twists, and a really big A. The center "eye" of the A was inspired by pacific northwest tribal art and is meant to imply an all seeing eye of the King. The Harpoon was inspired by his old hook hand, which in turn inspired the Captain Ahab beard.

Really nice redesign and render! One comment though - Perhaps some googles would add some additional interest to the design as well? Like the one's the Olympic swimmers wear!

Very cool. I like it. It's a little more intimidating than usual too.

Very well done! My only nitpick is the hood is a little silly. Perhaps a full cowl?

Perhaps. I think that it fit too tight. A little looser and it would feel more natural, but I was going for a streamlining effect for swimming.
One contest judge said that he looks like Cornhoolio. Hard to argue.

Awesome, I dig it!!!

Thanks man. I really dig the one you did with the aqua fish scales.

NICE! Love it! Not sure if the "eye" of the "A" look like Pacific Northwest tribal art, but its a nice touch and thought. Like the way you gave Arthur a medieval look by giving him a chainmail hood. Not to mention the color usage is beautiful.
This piece will definately be in the top running in the contest! :)
A technical question: Out of curiousity how did you do the scale armour? Did you painted it in one by one or do you use a texture to map it over or you made use of filter?

Thanks. The "A" shape used to have much more tribal pattern within. Most of the time as the final is being drawn from the sketches, a lot of the detail is reduced.
The fish scales were sourced from a photo of fish skin, that was then 'warped' in photoshop to fit the individual cylinder shapes of the body. That's composited with the shadow and color layers. Takes a lot of little tweaks to get right.

Ah I see. Thanks for the insight. I guess finding the right image and compositing it to make it look natural isn't an easy task.
By the way, congrats for winning!
